The term Merchant Navy refers to a nation's commercial shipping and crews. During the First & Second World War Merchant Navy ships carrying valuable cargoes were at just as much risk as Royal Australian Navy (RAN) warships. ... Ships that sailed independently, rather than in convoys, ran a greater risk of being torpedoed.

The Australian War Memorial Commemorative Roll commemorates Australians who died during or as a result of service in wars, conflicts or operations identical with the Roll of Honour, but who are not members of the Australian Armed forces.
